Flooding has closed the emergency department of Edmonton’s Misericordia Hospital.

“That’s a big concern to everybody and hopefully we’ll have things opening soon,” Health Minister Stephen Mandel said Thursday.

Mandel said that the hospital has a command post in place to stabilize the situation.  The minister could not confirm reports that part of the ceiling has collapsed.

He said that the entire first floor of the hospital is affected.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley said she is hearing reports that the radiology unit is damaged and the cafeteria is closed.

She said Mandel needs to step up.

“We need to replace the Misericordia hospital,” she said.
