A traffic stop caught on video from a dashboard camera was shown at an assault trial in Camrose on Wednesday.
Simona Tibu is charged with assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.
Tibu claims that she was the one who was assaulted. Her lawyer is asking the court to stay the charges.
On Wednesday, the court was shown the video of what happened after an Alberta sheriff stopped Tibu for speeding while she was driving from Camrose to Edmonton in August 2013.
Tibu can be seen being pulled out of her car. She is handcuffed and appears upset.
Jim Fredericksen, a passing motorist, stopped to help. Frederickson told the court that Tibu was screaming, “Help me, help me.”
At the sheriff’s request, Frederickson called 911 and told the dispatcher that “the officer is getting really violent with her now.”
In response to a question from the dispatcher, Frederickson said that he felt the sheriff was using excessive force.
The trial is expecting to hear evidence from Tibu and the sheriff on Wednesday afternoon.
