RCMP say driver of semi that hit truck ‘unable to avoid impact’

RCMP have released more details about a crash near Oak Lake, Man. Monday that sent three people to hospital and littered the highway with pieces of a steel beam.

Police said Tuesday a red GMC Sierra turning westbound on the Trans-Canada at the intersection of Provincial Road 254, was hit by a white Volvo semi-trailer.

Police said the driver of the semi-trailer was unable to avoid the collision.

The vehicles ended up in opposite ditches and a large beam of steel the semi-trailer was transporting came loose and broke into pieces on the highway.

The semi-trailer driver, a 22-year-old male from Steinbach, Man. was not hurt.

The 41-year-old driver of the Sierra, a man from Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

His passengers, two men, 19 and 56, also from the First Nation, were also taken to hospital with more serious injuries.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision and the investigation continues.
