Mi’kmaq leaders say Transport Canada has pledged to resume consultations over the handling of the divestiture of the Sydney Harbour bottom.
The Mi’kmaq say they have not been adequately consulted by the federal government as it hands over the harbour floor to local authorities.
“They have now recognized they have an obligation to consult with us,” said Membertou First Nation Chief Terry Paul.
“I think it’s really great. It’s fantastic. It means the federal government is obligated to follow the consultation process and they agreed that should take place.”
Paul said Transport Canada contacted the band Thursday admitting “it made a mistake” and followed up with a letter Friday.
“They have asked us for a meeting and to meet with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, which we are happy to do,” said Paul.
He said the Mi’kmaq are not trying to hold up development in Sydney, but insists Ottawa has not lived up to its commitment to consult with and accommodate the native community.
Transport Canada would not comment directly on the Mi’kmaq claim the agency has admitted an error.
“Consultations with First Nations representatives on the proposed transfer of the Sydney Harbour bed are ongoing,” said department spokesperson Steve Bone in an e-mailed statement.
