Prentice to announce ‘new direction’ for Alberta licence plates

Jim Prentice will announce a “new direction” for Alberta’s licence plates at 2 p.m. Thursday.

In July the government announced that for the first time in 30 years the province would get new licence plates.

Albertans were asked to vote on a new design, which did not include the current “Wild Rose Country” slogan.

However, the three designs that were released — all given to the provincial government for free by the American multi-national 3M — were quickly met with controversy.

Many people were frustrated the government didn’t invite Alberta designers to submit their vision for the licence plates, something Graphos president Laurier Mandin called “the motivating insult.”

A graphic design firm in Edmonton was so underwhelmed by the proposed designs for the new licence plates that they even decided to make their own.

The Wildrose Party also launched their own licence plate competition in response to licence plate debate.

The province closed the voting on July 19. The new licence plates were supposed to be available in the spring of 2015 and will cost an extra $5 to “help cover the cost of production and implementation,” provincial officials said.
