Mike Mireau, beloved school priest, to be laid to rest Friday

Hundreds are expected at St. Joseph’s Basilica Friday for the funeral of beloved school priest Mike Mireau.

Mireau – affectionately known as “Father Catfish” to many – died on Monday after battling cancer.

The 42-year-old priest, who first started working at St. Francix Xavier school five years ago, was social media savvy – a skill he used to keep his students and staff updated on his diagnosis.

Rather than avoid speaking about the cancer that was killing him, Mireau blogged about the experience, telling students about his progress.

In addition to being remembered by the students and staff at St. Francis Xavier, Mireau is also being honoured by the Edmonton Catholic School Board; the board announced Tuesday that a new school in the Summerside neighbourhood, set to open in 2016, will be named after the priest.

CBC News will livestream the funeral beginning at 10 a.m. MT.
