Edmonton Police are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a dementia patient at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Police have confirmed the EPS sexual assault response team has been called in after a 52-year-old woman filed a complaint over the weekend.
Colleen Turner with Alberta Health Services said AHS is working closely with police to investigate the matter. AHS will also be conducting an internal review, she added.
A spokesperson for Health Minister Stephen Mandel says Mandel has requested a full briefing from AHS about the alleged incident.
“Alberta has legislation and policies in place to protect people in care,” said Matthew Grant. “That being said, any time abuse is reported it needs to be reported to the authorities and it needs to be investigated.”
