Winnipeg city councillors will be asked to support a call for a national inquiry into murdered and missing aboriginal women.
Coun. Dan Vandal will present that motion to council on Wednesday. He said the issue is a major one and the discovery in August of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine’s body in the Red River touched a nerve with Winnipeggers.
And they want action, he said.
“Although we’re calling on the federal government to take action I think it’s time that cities got involved,” Vandal said.
His motion also calls on the Winnipeg Police Service to do everything it can to investigate and solve the plight of missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Vandal’s not sure what kind of support he will receive, as some councillors do not support a national public inquiry.
“We need to do everything that we can to just stop this, prevent this from occurring again,” he said.
Coun. Jenny Gerbasis tweeted on Tuesday that she will back the motion.
Will be seconding @stbdan‘s motion #wpgcouncil for action on our missing & murdered aboriginal women. http://t.co/Dy0UpFLfGl #Winnipeg
