Welcome to a new weekly feature, where I will tell you all about the decisions being made at city council. Watch for my live updates all week on Twitter and let me know what issues you care about at City Hall.

Katz Boulevard?

The Katz Group wants to buy 103th Street to go with it’s new arena district development.

A proposal going before council would let the Katz Group redesign the street between 103th and 104th Avenue, and make it a pedestrian only destination on special occasions.

City departments have no issue with the idea. The public will get to weigh-in on Monday.

Speaking of the arena…

The downtown arena is on time and on budget. On Tuesday, council will get an update on how it’s coming along, and more importantly, where they’re going to get the money to finish it.

The city is asking for $25 million from a provincial grant this month — but there is still another $7 million outstanding.

They’re also asking for another $7 million each from the province and the federal government to help pay for the community rink, which is already under construction.

For those who are interested, here’s a live feed of the construction on 104th Avenue.

Not exactly on cloud nine

The city’s plan to save money by moving to the cloud has gone terribly awry.

City staff hoped using Google instead of Microsoft would save them about $9.2 million over five years. Instead, the change only saved about $2.4 million, and cost much more to implement than anticipated.

Councillors will get a chance to grill the city administration over what went wrong on Tuesday.
