Canadian Grain Commission compensates eligible producers for unpaid deliveries to Grasslands Brokerage & Consulting Ltd.

Winnipeg, Manitoba (October 22, 2026) – Producers who were not paid for grain delivered to Grasslands Brokerage & Consulting Ltd. have been compensated for their eligible claims through the Canadian Grain Commission’s Safeguards for Grain Farmers Program.

Grasslands Brokerage & Consulting Ltd.’s grain dealer licence was revoked on July 10, 2026, after the company failed to meet the Canadian Grain Commission’s requirements to remain licensed. Following a review of individual producer claims, the Canadian Grain Commission determined that there were 2 eligible claims for unpaid deliveries to Grasslands Brokerage & Consulting Ltd. The company’s security was not sufficient to fully compensate eligible producers, so individual payments were prorated and producers received 68% compensation for their eligible claims.

The Canadian Grain Commission’s final audit of the company found additional amounts owing to several other producers. However, these amounts are ineligible for compensation because the deliveries fell outside of the program eligibility period or were of a grain that is not regulated by the Canada Grain Act.

While Grasslands Brokerage and Consulting Ltd continues to operate, they are not licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission. Grain producers who do business with this company on or after July 10, 2026, are not protected by security under the Canada Grain Act.

The world is changing rapidly. Trade shifts, global conflicts, and climate change are all putting pressure on our food systems, driving up prices at home. While Canada is one of the largest exporters of agri-food products in the world, Canadians continue to face some of the highest grocery costs in the G7. We are not harnessing enough technology in our agri-food sectors, and our food chains rely too heavily on foreign suppliers.

Canada’s government is focused on what we can control: building a stronger, more independent, more resilient Canadian economy. Central to this mission is a stronger, more affordable food system. That is why today, the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), announced more than $3 million for Lethbridge Polytechnic to launch new skilled trades programs that support Canada’s growing agri-food sector.

Businesses across southern Alberta have identified a shortage of skilled tradespeople and technicians who understand both food manufacturing environments and advanced production technologies. Shortages of workers with knowledge of food-safe maintenance practices, sanitation protocols, specialized processing equipment, automation, and industrial controls can lead to longer installation and repair times, reduced productivity, and delayed business growth. This increases food costs for consumers.

This investment through PrairiesCan will help Lethbridge Polytechnic launch new programs that provide the knowledge needed to effectively work on equipment and machinery used in food processing and manufacturing. Program participants will require minimal on-the-job training to adapt their foundational skills to the specialized operating conditions demanded in the agri-food sector. This new programming will strengthen domestic food-processing capacity while supporting quality jobs in southern Alberta.

Seizures of contraband and unauthorized items at Drumheller Institution


October 22, 2026 – Drumheller, Alberta – Correctional Service Canada

On October 18, 2026, as a result of the vigilance of staff members, packages containing contraband and unauthorized items were seized at Drumheller Institution.

The contraband and unauthorized items seized included THC, tobacco products, cell phones and accessories. The total estimated institutional value of this seizure is $148,250.

The police have been notified and the institution is investigating.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.

CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

CSC has also set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

Strengthening Indigenous economic development and tourism in Prince Edward Island


Federal funding supports four Indigenous-led organizations pursuing sustainable economic opportunities

Strong Indigenous businesses, organizations and communities contribute to a more inclusive and resilient economy. Investments in Indigenous-led economic development, innovation and community capacity help create opportunities for sustainable growth and long-term prosperity across Atlantic Canada.

Today, Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, along with Kent MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Cardigan announced $309,000 in federal support for four Indigenous-led organizations in Prince Edward Island. 

These investments will help organizations build capacity, enhance visitor experiences, support research and development activities, and create new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

Today’s announcement supports the following projects:

  • $100,000 for L’nu Energy Inc. to acquire specialized equipment, including a photovoltaic solar array, diesel generator, and fabrication equipment. The investment will support research and development activities, strengthen business growth, and advance the company’s work in renewable energy and innovation.
  •  $92,500 for Abegweit First Nation to develop a community-driven economic development plan for 2026-2031. The plan will help establish priorities, goals, and actions that support sustainable economic development, effective governance, organizational capacity, and community well-being, while providing a roadmap to guide future growth and investment initiatives.
  • $86,500 for the Indigenous Tourism Association of Prince Edward Island to further develop Indigenous tourism products and experiences across Epekwitk. The investment will enhance visitor experiences, provide training opportunities, support Indigenous artisans, and strengthen strategic partnerships at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • $30,000 for Lennox Island First Nation to develop a tourism growth plan addressing barriers such as human resource capacity and succession planning, while identifying ways to build on existing assets and generate revenue from tourism experiences. The investment will support new opportunities for cultural tourism, partnerships, employment and economic development in the community.

Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting Indigenous-led economic development and advancing economic reconciliation to build a stronger, more inclusive economy.

The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Minister Miller announces the extension of Michele McKenzie’s appointment as interim Director of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, announced the extension of the appointment of Michele McKenzie as interim Director of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 for an additional period of up to two years.

An internationally recognized sustainable tourism strategy expert and experienced public-sector leader, Michele McKenzie has worked across Canada and internationally, developing sustainable tourism strategies and advising governments, economic development agencies and businesses on innovation and changing operating environments, while bringing extensive governance and board experience with organizations including Invest in Canada, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority and Parks Canada.

Michele McKenzie previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Tourism Commission (Destination Canada) and as Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage for Nova Scotia. In 2020, she received the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Michele McKenzie has served as interim Director of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier since December 2025.
