Secretary of State van Koeverden marks opening of the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat


OTTAWA, August 11, 2026

The Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), issued the following statement:

“Over the next five days, the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta, will bring together more than 1,700 participants from across Canada to compete in 10 sports, celebrating excellence, determination and the power sport has to bring Canadians together.

Thank you to the exceptional athletes who have worked tirelessly to get here! Your dedication and grit have brought you to the national stage, and as you compete, remember that millions of Canadians are cheering you on with pride and admiration.

Special Olympics Canada, together with coaches, volunteers, families and supporters, has brought these Games to Medicine Hat, where athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities will have the chance to participate, compete and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Special Olympics underscore the values of sport, including strength and courage, while emphasizing the importance of participation.

We are proud to support initiatives that make sport more accessible and inclusive for everyone. Together, we will continue to remove barriers to participation and ensure that more Canadians experience the life-changing joy of sport.

As the Games begin, we celebrate every athlete competing in Medicine Hat. On behalf of all Canadians from coast to coast to coast, good luck and we’ll be right there with you every step of the way!

Death of an inmate from the Regional Psychiatric Centre


August 11, 2026 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Correctional Service Canada

On August 7, 2026, Steeve Racine, an inmate from the Regional Psychiatric Centre, died while in our custody.

At the time of death, the inmate was 62 years old and had been serving a life sentence since August 30, 1991.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

Backgrounder: The Government of Canada invests over $1.9M to support Indigenous economic participation in the Northwest Territories


August 10, 2026 – Yellowknife, Northwest Territories – Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

This information adds to the news release issued today Indigenous-led projects in the NWT to expand businesses and empower youth about CanNor’s support, the businesses and organizations that received funding and their projects.

The Government of Canada, through CanNor, is providing up to $1,982,199 to four Indigenous-led projects that will help expand business operations and empower Indigenous youth.

Project information

Project: Supporting and diversifying Sahtu’s airline sustainability
Recipient: North-Wright Airways Ltd.
Location: Norman Wells
Details: A four-year project to install a new hangar at the Norman Wells Airport. The project will expand North-Wright Airways’ capacity to operate larger aircraft, improve passenger services and cargo handling infrastructure, and support more reliable service to remote communities in the Sahtu Region.
CanNor contribution: Up to $1,000,000, repayable
Funding program: IDEANorth

Project: Timber harvesting expansion
Recipient: Undah Gogha Corporation
Location:  Fort Providence
Details: A three-year project for the Undah Gogha Corporation to help the Deh Gáh Got’ı̨ę First Nation expand and establish a larger timber harvesting production site in Fort Providence. This will help the forestry operations grow and further support the First Nation’s economic independence.
CanNor contribution: Up to $827,999
Funding program: IDEANorth and RTRI

Project: Enterprise resource planning software
Recipient: Det’on Cho Management LP
Location: Yellowknife
Details: A two-year project to purchase, implement, and integrate two add-on modules to a new business management system. The add-ons will improve reporting and identify efficiencies in the Det’on Cho Management group of companies, positioning the organization to capitalize on development opportunities.
CanNor contribution: Up to $123,200
Funding program: NIEOP

Project: Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Indigenous Youth
Recipient: Thebacha Business Development Services Inc.
Location: South Slave
Details: A one-year project for an entrepreneurship camp for youth. This interactive three-day Bear’s Lair Dream Camp is designed to help 30 Indigenous youth, aged 11 to 18, develop fundamental business skills, increase financial literacy, build confidence, and connect with Indigenous role models.
CanNor contribution: Up to $31,000

Indigenous-led projects in the NWT to expand businesses and empower youth


CanNor is investing over $1.9 million in four Indigenous-led projects to build new aviation infrastructure, expand business operations, and teach youth about entrepreneurship.

August 10, 2026 – Yellowknife, Northwest Territories – Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Indigenous organizations, businesses and entrepreneurs provide essential local services and play a vital role in building strong northern economies. When these organizations and individuals thrive, they support resilient communities that enhance Canada’s sovereignty and build long-term prosperity in the North.

Today, Dr. Brendan Hanley, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Member of Parliament for the Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for CanNor, announced a contribution of up to $1,982,199 to support four Indigenous-led projects across the Northwest Territories. Delivered through CanNor, this funding will help improve airline infrastructure in the Sahtu Region and advance timber harvesting in Fort Providence. It will also support software upgrades to improve business operations for Yellowknife companies and empower 30 Indigenous youth in the South Slave Region through an entrepreneurship bootcamp.

In combination with the $49.5 million in funding announced in Inuvik today by the Honourable Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, joined by the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons to upgrade the runway and access road at the Inuvik (Mike Zubko) Airport, in partnership with the Government of the Northwest Territories, these investments will bolster the North.

By investing in projects like these, the Government of Canada is advancing Indigenous economic participation and fostering a diverse, sustainable northern economy that benefits all Canadians.

Government of Canada supports two popular fall events at the New Brunswick Botanical Garden


EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick, August 10, 2026

We are thrilled to support the cultural vitality of Edmundston and the surrounding region through two much-anticipated events at the New Brunswick Botanical Garden: the Grande Grouille d’automne in October and the 7th edition of Jardin emballé (Wrapped Garden) in November.

Today, Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault, Member of Parliament (Madawaska–Restigouche), accompanied by Annie Koutrakis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Jobs and Families and Member of Parliament (Vimy), announced funding of more than $31,000 for the New Brunswick Botanical Garden Society. They made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages. This funding is being provided through the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, which supports local festivals, events and projects.

From October 1 to 4 2026, the Grande Grouille d’automne will once again transform the New Brunswick Botanical Garden into a colourful and enchanting fall destination, bringing together people of all ages. It features illuminated and themed decorations, musical performances, entertainment and activities for visitors of all ages. The event has become a much-anticipated annual tradition in the region, with the participation of numerous community partners and volunteers.

The 7th edition of Jardin emballé returns from November 6 to 8, 2026, and will kick off the holiday season as the Garden transforms into a sparkling and illuminated setting. The event brings together local artisans and creators through a large public market, while musicians and singers contribute to the festive atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy food and beverages, making Jardin emballé an opportunity to discover and celebrate the creativity and talent found throughout the region.

Together, these two events help extend the Garden’s cultural programming beyond its regular summer season and provide opportunities for artists, artisans, performers, volunteers and community organizations to participate and connect with the public.

Government of Canada invests in J.M. Drama Alumni in Kitchener


KITCHENER, Ontario, August 10, 2026

Across Canada, local arts and cultural organizations are at the heart of their communities, bringing people together to educate, entertain and inspire. Strengthening these organizations is essential to building a strong Canada, protecting our culture, and ensuring that all Canadians have opportunities to experience arts and culture in their own communities.

Today, Tim Louis, Member of Parliament (Kitchener–Conestoga). announced $156,000 in federal funding for the J.M. Drama Alumni organization, on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages. J.M. Drama Alumni is a non-profit professional arts organization in Kitchener that presents arts series.

The Canada Arts Presentation Fund investment will support a variety of diverse performances and outreach activities over the next three years, such as a deaf musician’s workshop and a jazz series spring weekend workshop at The Registry Theatre. Operated by J.M. Drama Alumni, this venue is an inclusive, multidisciplinary space that serves as a gathering place for artists, audiences and the broader community.

This funding will give residents and visitors more opportunities to experience a diverse range of professional arts performances including music, theatre, dance, spoken word and multidisciplinary presentations. Outreach activities will further strengthen the community and encourage participation in the arts across the region.
