An Alberta crime report that was filed recently concerns human remains, and RCMP are looking for tips in the case. In February 2013 a skull was found in the garage of the Groeneveldt family when the structure was cleaned out, and the human remains were turned over to the police. The owner of the home passed away years early, and the skull was located underneath a number of items in the garage. Family members of the deceased homeowner believe that he gained possession of the skull in the 1960s or 1970s when he attended a party in Hinton but no one knew where the skull originated from or who it belonged to. RCMP are asking the public for tips in order to determine whose skull was found and where it came from before Leo Groeneveldt acquired it.

According to the Alberta crime report filed on the human remains the RCMP do not have any further clues, and are asking anyone who attended a Hinton party in the 1960s or 1970s when a human skull was displayed, passed around, or shown. Without tips from the public law enforcement may never be able to tell who the skull belonged to in life. Whoever the skull belonged to deserves to be identified, if for no other reason than to bury the human remains properly after knowing who it is and how they died. It could be from an old medical school skeleton, it could belong to someone who died of natural causes, or it could be the skull of someone who met a violent end.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently issued food recalls because of salmonella fears, and these recalls cover both peanut butter and almond butter. According to the official notice on the food recalls there are concerns about salmonella contamination, and this bacteria can cause everything from minor symptoms to serious illness which can be life threatening in some cases. The brands involved with the salmonella fears are Trader Joe’s and MaraNatha, and the products were widely distributed and sold across Canada. The public is asked to make sure that they do not have these products in their cupboards, and if the products are found they should either be thrown out or returned back to the store where they were originally purchased.

The food recalls were issued in Canada after the USA issued food recalls due to salmonella fears after the United States Food and Drug Administration performed testing on the recalled products. So far no one in Canada has reported using the products and becoming sick but there were 4 cases of illness in the USA from the peanut butter and almond butter. Salmonella fears are well founded because this bacteria can be devastating for certain groups who are more susceptible. These groups include anyone who has a compromised or weakened immune system, women who are pregnant, younger children, older individuals, and anyone with serious medical conditions. If you are healthy and you are exposed to salmonella you may get a headache and body aches, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramps.
