The Annual Oil Sands Strongman Classic in Fort MacMurray

It is that time of year again, and the annual Oil Sands Strongman Classic in Fort MacMurray was held recently. This event included competitions for men and women both, and all ages of participants were encouraged to attend and compete. Advance registration was required and the annual Oil Sands Strongman Classic is held each year in Fort MacMurray around the end of August. This is a great way for visitors and residents in the community to get out, have some fun, socialize with other community members, and see some incredible feats of strength as well. This event is a competition but it is also used as a fund raiser, and strongman competitions are also considered a sport by many because of the training and effort needed to be successful in any of the contests that are held.

The annual Oil Sands Strongman Classic in Fort MacMurray is sponsored by the Fort MacMurray Strongman Association. This association was established in July of 2014 by Lennea and Leif Palsen. The goal of the association is to encourage growth in the Strongman sport. The competition events for men and for women are held simultaneously, and these include a bus pull, a shoulder pressing medley, SUV deadlifts, Yoke/Farmer medley, an Atlas stone run for the men. Women can compete in a bus pull, a log press, tire deadlifts, 100′ Farmers walk, and an Atlas stone run. Each of the competitions may be changed, depending on the availability and the number of participants who are registered.

Thomas Lukaszuk, the contender for the Progressive Conservative leadership in Alberta, is facing hot water for wasting taxpayer dollars on roaming charges that he incurred while he was on a personal trip overseas. When questioned about it Lukaszuk stated “When you travel as a minister, you pre-plan as much as you can. When something goes sideways in Alberta, all of a sudden you’re inundated with documents. We’re talking document packages are being sent to you by data transfers. So when I came back, I dealt with executive council and I said, ‘Guys, we’re not paying this bill. Negotiate it. Bring it down because this is ridiculous,’ and they negotiated with the service provider but they couldn’t bring it down.” Lukszuk refuses to consider paying the bill himself and reimbursing the government for the roaming charges because he said i”It’s the unfortunate cost of doing business. The fact is, it was unavoidable.”

The roaming charges in question that are the root of the scandal concerning wasting taxpayer dollars. While Thomas Lukaszuk was on a personal trip to Israel and Poland in 2012 the government was billed $20,243.91 for roaming charges because Lukaszuk used 2.19 gigabytes of data while he was abroad on the trip. The reason for the trip was an invitation from the Simon Weisenthal Centre to meet with a survivor of Auschwitz. Lukaszuk defends his use of the roaming charges explaining that a large number of documents, both legal and government, were exchanged with others while we was in these two countries. The taxpayers may see it differently during the next election cycle.

New Dance Instructor Starts at Uptown Dance in Fort MacMurray

Rhea Bowman is the newest addition to the Fort MacMurray Uptown Dance studio, and she recently started at the school as a dance instructor. Bowman comes to Fort MacMurray from Toronto and she brings plenty of dance experience with her, as well as the joy and love for this activity that she has always had. When interviewed Rhea Bowman explained “I love the relationships you build with your students and the chance you get to see them grow. You see your work in them. You see how much you’re putting into them and you see the growth from the beginning of the year to the end of it.” As soon as the new instructor came to Fort MacMurray she was already extremely involved, acting as an instructor for the Summer Dance Intensive Camp.

Many people would be surprised to find out that Rhea Bowman, the new Uptown Dance instructor in Fort MacMurray, has trained professional football players to dance in the past. When asked about this she replied “I taught ballet to a couple of CFL players through a company called DBA Elite. I helped them with their flexibility, so the program was made for them. I took ballet and flexibility training and combined them together to work on their hips and their co-ordination. The football players are so shy, believe it or not, and even though they’re so big, they lack confidence, so I think getting them to break out of their shell and get them to do certain things helps me to come back to little kids. If you can encourage a full-sized man, talking to a child is really easy. Just seeing the development and difference in training a child and training an adult, it’s a really interesting process.”

Fort MacMurray MP Confuses Pakistan and India During Recent Ceremony

David Yurdiga, the Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP, has issued an apology to the Indian community for his earlier mistake confusing India and Pakistan when he spoke at J. Howard Pew Park for the Fort Mcmurray Gujarati Cultural Society. The event was to celebrate the Independence of India. When asked about the error Yurdiga stated “I understand the information I was given regarding the India Independence Day speech was inaccurate; however I took full responsibility to ensure I made the appropriate adjustments during my speech. I am currently working with the community leaders of the Fort McMurray Gujarati Cultural Society, and I look forward to our meeting as discussed. All cultures and communities are critical to the success of our Canadian way of life, and I am committed and dedicated to continue working with the many diverse communities in this region.”

The formal apology by David Yurdiga about his error concerning Pakistan during his Fort MacMurray speech has not satisfied some in the local Indian community. According to Nidal Patel, who is a member of the group which held the event, “This guy was so rude. He did not properly apologize for his mistake or explain it to us. I mean everyone took it as a ‘Yeah, OK. That happens.’ But we were expecting an explanation and formal apology. We as a people are peaceful. We don’t do violence or those things. But India and Pakistan is a sensitive issue. To show up at an Indian ceremony and speak about Pakistan was seen as insensitive to us. We recognize it was a mistake, but at the same time, it seems he didn’t do his homework. Our flag was clearly not Pakistani. At the top, he did not properly apologize and express his mistake, and we would like one.”

Brian Makey is Named New Fire Chief for Red Deer Fire Department

The chief operating officer of Wood Buffalo, Brian Makey, was recently offered the position of Fire Chief for Red Deer and the offer was accepted. The former Wood Buffalo COO will start the new position in October, with October 6 being his first day on the job. Brian Makey has a long history in Red Deer and the Wood Buffalo region, he has worked for almost 30 years with the municipality. During much of this time Makey was a firefighter. In 1986 when Brian Makey arrived in Fort MacMurray and the Wood Buffalo area he started low on the ladder. Through the years since Brian has advanced swiftly, with positions as a fire lieutenant, fire deputy chief, and then regional fire chief. For 12 years Makey also served as the Fort McMurray Firefighters’ IAFF Local 2494 Union President.

When Brian Makey took the position as COO in 2012 there was no doubt he was qualified, but as the recent change shows his heart has always been in fighting fires. As the new Red Deer Fire Chief Makey is doing what he loves and what he is good at. According to Makey “I have been proud to call Fort McMurray my home for the last thirty years. My wife and I have been very involved in the community, and we have seen tremendous growth and change during our time here. My career with the municipality has been rewarding, meaningful, and something I am proud of. I have always been passionate about public safety and emergency services. This is an opportunity which I am looking forward to.”
