Ranking the Best Saturday Night Live Sketches Of All Time

Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night Live‘s best sketches!

In honor of some of the show’s content from the SNL Vault being available on Peacock, NBC’s new streaming service, we’re looking back at of our personal favorite sketches of all time from the storied show.

Since the program first aired in 1975, we’ve seen hundreds of hilarious sketches full of characters, impressions and jokes that make us laugh, but there are a few that stand out above the rest.

Whether it’s the era of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader or the most recent seasons with players like Leslie Jones, every generation has been blessed by watching some of the funniest people in the business entertain us from the famed Studio 8H.

For Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers, you can enjoy even more SNL because Peacock is available for you today! Later this summer, on July 15, the service will also roll out for everyone to enjoy.

Until then, check out roundup below and then sound off on which is your favorite.

10. Sarah Palin and Hillary Address the Nation

The dream team of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey together on SNL is one of our favorite eras, and between sketches like “Meet Your Second Wife” and “Mom Jeans,” it’s hard to pick which of their collaborations is their best.

However, when the two appeared as Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin in the midst of the 2008 Presidential race, their impressions instantly became iconic and the hilarious writing proved Saturday Night Live‘s standing as essential political comedy.

It also may be this sketch showcasing the hilarious duo that led to them landing the gig to host the Golden Globes together from 2013 to 2015 and, thankfully, the pair is slated to host the show again next year.

9. Two Wild & Crazy Guys

Some of Saturday Night Live‘s greatest players included Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd, whose recurring Festrunk Brothers characters always made us laugh as they tried (and failed) to pick up women.

Plus, their catchphrase was insanely quotable.

8. The Californians

What are YOU doing here?

L.A. stereotypes get fully played out in this recurring sketch featuring players like Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, whose soap-level drama always includes the best way to avoid the 405.

7. Dear Sister

Mmm, what’d you say? The over-the-top second season finale of the teen series The O.C. got the parody treatment from Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig, who like us seem to question why Imogen Heap‘s “Hide and Seek” was the song choice for when Marissa shot Trey.

6. Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks

SNL‘s Jeopardy-themed sketches have always been a hit, such as the iconic “Celebrity Jeopardy” segments, but 2016’s “Black Jeopardy” with Tom Hanks perfectly tackled race and divided politics without invoking stereotypes.

It also was a part of one of the sketch series’ best episodes ever, with Hanks’ delighting us later in the episode as David S. Pumpkins.

5. D*** In a Box

The Lonely Island era of Saturday Night Live coincided perfectly with the rise of Internet comedy, gifting us with amazing Digital Shorts sketches like “Lazy Sunday” and “I Just Had Sex.”

However, the comedy group’s best contribution may be “D*** In a Box,” where Andy Samberg is joined by Justin Timberlake to gift their girlfriends with something better than a house in the hills or a diamond ring.

4. Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood

While we all adored Mr. Rogers, Eddie Murphy‘s parody of America’s favorite neighbor is still one of SNL‘s best recurring characters.

In the various sketches, Murphy’s Mr. Robinson teaches kids a valuable lesson in a much grittier and often illegal way than Mr. Rogers would, and the comedian even brought back the bit when he hosted in 2019.

3. Matt Foley: Van Down By The River

One of Saturday Night Live‘s all-time greats was Chris Farley, whose physical comedy made sketches like “Chippendales Audition” some of the best in the series’ history.

However, in our book, Farley’s best was when he played Matt Foley, a motivational speaker who tries to scare kids straight lest they end up “living in a van down by the river!”

2. Wayne’s World

Back in the day, Saturday Night Live sketches were so a part of the zeitgeist that they spun off movies like MacGruber and A Night at the Roxbury, but the film that broke out even to non-SNL fans was Wayne’s World.

The spin-off was inspired by the sketch by the same name featuring two metalheads (played by Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey) who broadcast a show out of Wayne’s parent’s basement about all their exploits. In a word, these sketches were always “excellent!”

1. More Cowbell

One of Saturday Night Live‘s greatest players was Will Ferrell, who has had so many memorable characters and sketches that there are two DVD sets of his greatest hits from the show.

But for us, seeing him thrash around with a cowbell while Christopher Walken demands even more showcased the performer at his best.

Find Out if Nikki Bella's Grandma Approves of Artem Chigvintsev in New Total Bellas Sneak Peek

Nana knows best!

In this exclusive preview clip for this week’s all-new Total Bellas, sisters Brie Bella and Nikki Bella are off to their grandmother’s house for a visit, and Nikki’s got Artem Chigvintsev in tow. It doesn’t take long for him to figure out how things are going to go, either!

Once the three arrive, along with the twins’ mom Kathy Colace, Artem quietly asks Nikki if he can see the room they’ll be sleeping in.

“See what room?” Nikki responds. “We’re not sleeping here.”

“Nana can’t know that you guys share a bed!” Brie adds.

In a confessional interview, Kathy talks more about Nana’s “rules.”

“There is no sleeping in the same bedroom when it comes to Nana,” she says. “And if you are not married, or at least engaged, you don’t share a room at anyone’s house.”

After the Bella women lay down the law, Artem and Nikki’s grandma discuss his cooking abilities. Overall, everything seems to be going well—something that Nikki explains is important for her.

“My grandparents were so involved in raising my sister and I, and I’ve always put them on, like, the biggest pedestal,” Nikki says in a confessional. “So the fact that she’s loving Artem means everything to me.”

And if Nana didn’t take to the professional dancer?

“…I’d probably have to break up with Artem,” Nikki adds.

See more of the visit in the above clip, and be sure to catch Thursday’s Total Bellas!

Jimmy Fallon Recalls How His Wife Nancy "Messed" Up His Proposal

Todd Williamson for Getty Images

Did you ever hear the story of how Jimmy Fallon proposed to his wife Nancy Juvonen?

The couple told the story during Tuesday’s at-home edition of The Tonight Show.

After the late-night host purchased a Neil Lane ring, he called up Nancy’s father to ask for permission to propose. Jimmy also let Nancy’s brother know he was going to pop the big question.

“Then, what happened was, you messed everything up for me,” Jimmy recalled. “You get to the door and you go, ‘I have a surprise for you.’ I go, ‘I hope it doesn’t mess up my surprise,’ which was the big thing. I got the ring.”

The surprise was that Nancy had secured a reservation at Per Se—an acclaimed restaurant in New York. Jimmy said he had been “dying” to go to the establishment. However, he knew he didn’t want to propose there.

“I was going to get engaged in, like, Gramercy Park or something that will just always be around. Something classic,” he said. “I didn’t want to go to a restaurant because, what if in 30 years, the restaurant changes hands? Now it’s a laser tag place. Now, it’s like, ‘Kids this is where your mom and I got engaged—at the laser tag house.'”

Jimmy decided to go to the restaurant and propose after the meal. However, the dinner ended up being 14 courses long. After they got back home, Jimmy received a call from Nancy’s brother, who wanted to know if the celeb had gotten down on one knee. Jimmy said he hadn’t and explained the dinner was several hours long. Still, Nancy’s brother encouraged him to follow through with the proposal plans and suggested Jimmy ask Nancy to be his wife at a pub called Molly’s. So, Jimmy asked his leading lady if she wanted to go out for one more drink. While she agreed, he didn’t end up popping the question until several months later.

“It was longer than your parents or my parents wanted,” Nancy, who met Jimmy on the set of Saturday Night Live and then went on to work with him in the movie Fever Pitch, said.

So, how did he do it? Jimmy said he proposed to Nancy at her family’s summer house in New Hampshire. While he tried to fight back the tears, he couldn’t contain the waterworks.

“As soon as I started remotely pulling the ring out of my pocket, I start crying,” he recalled. “I get down on one knee and I start shaking…My voice is, like, quivering. It looks like I’m having a heart attack.”

Of course, the producer said yes. In fact, her family saw the whole thing and started cheering from inside the house. The two tied the knot in 2007. The rest, as they say, is history.

Watch the video to hear them tell the whole story.

Expecto, Feelings: See All the Kid Stars From the Harry Potter Movies, Then and Now

The auburn-haired actress was barely 10 when she started playing Ginny Weasley, going from “Ron’s little sister” to Harry Potter’s soul mate over the course of the films. In 2011 Wright won the Most Edgy Look Award at the Rodial Beauty Awards and made her London Fashion Week debut walking the runway for London-based designer Katie Eary.

Wright graduated from London College of Communication and formed her own production company, BonBonLumière, in 2012. in addition to acting she has written and directed her own short films, including Separate We Come, Separate We Go, starring her former co-star David Thewlis (Remus Lupin); 2014’s Know Thyself, with Christian Coulson, who played Tom Riddle; and Medusa’s Ankles featuring Jason Isaacs, aka Lucius Malfoy.

“I want to the reveal emotions and beliefs which lie obscured by the barriers we put up, from fear of being judged or abandoned,” Wright explains on the BonBonLumière website. “Exploring themes which resonate with me; landscape, love and loss, redemption and the process of realisation, perfect or partial.”

Wright was previously engaged to Sweeney Todd star Jamie Campbell Bower, who played a young Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Death Hallows Part 1, but they called it off in 2012. She then dated Simon Hammerstein for several years but appears to be single these days. In December Wright joined Emma Watson, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis and Evanna Lynch for a reunion that, happily, someone thought to take a picture of. “Time turning,” Wright captioned the pic, punctuating the sentiment with a lightning bolt.

Why Christina Anstead Says the Coronavirus Crisis Has Helped Her and Tarek El Moussa ''Bond More''

Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa continue to successfully navigate the tricky waters of co-parenting.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Pop‘s Justin Sylvester, the HGTV star explained the upside of remaining close with an ex for the health and happiness of your children.

“Luckily,” Christina shared, “we live two streets away so that’s really easy for us, because nothing’s really changed in that aspect.”

In fact, the interior design guru explained, “In times of crisis, we kind of bond more because obviously our No. 1 priority is the kids. We’re just trying to figure out what’s best for them and making sure that they don’t feel scared. That’s not something they should be feeling right now, so we’re just trying to stay positive for them.”

Christina, who shares two kids with Tarek and another of her own with husband Ant Anstead, also praised his girlfriend, Heather Rae Young. “She’s sweet. We like her,” she shared, telling Justin it’s “probably true” that Heather is helping the former husband and wife get along during these uncertain times.

And with more time on her hands to spend with family, Christina said she’s putting it to good use in honor of her new book, The Wellness Remodel.

“To be completely honest, before I was stuck at home I would never sit down and prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner. That was never going to happen. Who has time for all that? But now, guess what? I have time, so I get the kids involved,” she explained.

The 36-year-old said she and her little ones are making healthy recipes included in the book. “When they make it together, they feel proud of themselves and they want to eat it all,” Christina noted.
