After 15 Years the Shania Twain Centre is Demolished

Shania Twain Centre, tourist attraction
Shania Twain Centre, tourist attraction

The Shania Twain Centre started out as a terrific idea for a tourist attraction, but the Timmins, Ontario facility did not live up to the hype and demolition has been started to destroy the facility and eliminate all traces of a project that started out so promising yet ended up being a waste of time and money. Plans for the Shania Twain Centre started in 1999, and the facility finally opened on Canada Day in 2001. The hope was that the well known Canadian singer could attract tourists to the area on a large scale, and improve the local economy as a result. The grand opening occurred without Shania Twain, because the singer was pregnant and unable to travel, but that did not stop people from coming from all over the globe to check out this attraction while it was open.

The Shania Twain Centre idea was very popular with Canadians, and the singer was the leading female country singer in the world when the project was first planned. There were very few people in the world who did not know who Shania Twain was, and that made a tourist attraction featuring this country icon seem like a great idea. The problem was that interest waned in the Shania Twain Centre as the years went by, and there were fewer visitors to the tourist attraction as the time passed. Many enjoyed the fact that a visit to this tourist attraction also included a tour of the conic gold mine in the area as well, but now the centre is in the process of being demolished.

December 6, 2014 – The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance, today issued the following statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those put at risk by this powerful typhoon, as people are still coping with painful memories and the destruction wrought by Typhoon Haiyan just over a year ago.

“Canada stands ready to support relief efforts and provide humanitarian assistance as required. To this effect, Canada has set aside funding for GlobalMedic toward preparatory efforts and its immediate response in support of communities that lie in the path of Typhoon Hagupit. To jump-start relief efforts, our government also has relief supplies ready to be deployed. Canada was a lead donor in response to last year’s Typhoon Haiyan, and as such many of our partners remain on the ground and will have capacity to provide relief efforts.

“The Canadian Armed Forces are pre-deploying assets toward the region to facilitate an expeditious response if necessary. The Interdepartmental Strategic Support Team is also readying for rapid deployment to the Philippines. The team’s mandate will be to undertake rapid assessment of the typhoon’s impact and make early recommendations on how Canada can support those in need and help the Government of the Philippines to address the immediate impacts of the disaster. The team is a joint civilian-military team, comprising employees from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces, including crisis-management specialists from the Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force, a humanitarian assistance specialist and others.

“Canadian officials in Ottawa and at our embassy in Manila are in close contact with Philippine authorities and will continue to monitor the impact of the typhoon. Canada stands ready to provide emergency consular assistance as required, and members of the Standing Rapid Deployment Team have been deployed to provide additional support to Canadians on the ground.”

Canadian citizens in the Philippines requiring emergency consular assistance should contact the Canadian embassy in Manila by calling (63-2) 857-9000 or toll-free (from a landline) at +1-800-1-110-0226. Canadian and American officials work together to improve cross-border communications

Canada – U.S. experiment tests resilience during emergencies

December 5, 2014         Ottawa, Ontario         Public Safety Canada and Department of National Defence

The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, today recognized the work of participants on both sides of the border in the third Canada – U.S. Enhanced Resiliency Experiment (CAUSE III).

This cross-border initiative consisted of experiments held over the course of November 2014. These experiments were based on two disaster scenarios – the first a Northeastern hurricane, and the second a wildfire in the Western Plains, affecting Alberta, Saskatchewan and Montana.

The hurricane portion of CAUSE III tested the capacity of officials to leverage the potential of social media volunteers to help coordinate disaster recovery efforts. It also examined how existing tools like the Canadian Multi-Agency Situational Awareness System (MASAS), the American Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and Virtual USA could be used to improve the efficiency of requests for mutual aid and contribute to enhanced situational awareness across borders.

The wildfire scenario focused on the operational ability to interconnect Alberta and Saskatchewan’s provincial radio systems with the Montana statewide radio system. During the scenario a land mobile radio network that covered all three jurisdictions and crossed provincial and international borders was successfully created. The operational efficiency of using deployable Public Safety Broadband Networks in a simulated disaster-response to provide interoperable communications between emergency responders on both sides of the border was also tested. CAUSE III provided the opportunity to test equipment to ensure vital communications can be made across borders during an emergency situation.

Quick Facts

This is the third installment of CAUSE since 2011. CAUSE provides participants with opportunities to use communications technology in a simulated setting to learn how the technology performs under different emergency management circumstances. This information can then be used to confirm the functionality and value of the technology, determine what changes need to be made to improve the technology for operational use, and what procedures and training may be needed.
CAUSE III is a collaborative effort between Defence Research and Development Canada’s Centre for Security Science (DRDC CSS), Public Safety Canada and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, in partnership with various provincial, municipal and non-governmental organizations
Canadian efforts for CAUSE III were primarily funded by Public Safety Canada through the Canada-U.S. Beyond the Border Initiative, as this project supports both nations’ key deliverables of interoperability and co-operation in emergency management.
The Canadian Safety and Security Program, which is a federal program led by DRDC CSS in partnership with Public Safety Canada, also provided funding, and in-kind contributions were provided by all participating organizations

Quotes

“The CAUSE III experiment is essential in strengthening Canada’s capacity to work with our American counterparts at all stages of emergency response – from early identifications and warnings to using new communications technology to help facilitate a faster and more coordinated response.”

– The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

“The CAUSE III experiment gives us valuable insight on how North American communications technology can best be used in disaster response. It is imperative Canada has the ability to work with our American allies to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.”

– The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Defence

“The radio component of the CAUSE III wildfire experiment was a watershed moment for public safety in Alberta. This experiment proved the capabilities and strengths that can be achieved when first responders can communicate directly with each other in a time of need regardless of their jurisdiction or country.”

– Jonathan Denis, Minister of Alberta Justice and Solicitor General

“Disasters such as wildfires and floods do not simply follow the borders on a map, which is why experiments like this are so valuable.  It is important that jurisdictional neighbours work together through initiatives like CAUSE to increase awareness and provide our communities and residents with the best possible information and response when faced with an emergency.”

– Duane McKay – Fire Commissioner for the province of Saskatchewan

Family Living With Corpse for 6 Months Had Unusual Resurrection Beliefs

family living with corpse, resurrection beliefs
family living with corpse, resurrection beliefs

A family living with a corpse for 6 months in Hamilton, Ontario, had some very unusual resurrection beliefs. When the family patriarch in the family passed away, from what authorities believe were natural causes, the family members did not contact the police. Instead the family prayed in the belief that the man would be resurrected by their prayers. All of this came to light when the family was evicted from their home because the mortgage payments were not being made, and that was when the authorities discovered the dead man. It is being said by the defense attorney in the case that 50 year old Peter Walsh, who had a severe foot infection due to diabetes, died of natural causes in March of 2013. Peter’s wife, 50 year old Kaling Wald, entered a guilty plea to the charge of failing to notify the police about the death. The court sentenced Kaling to counseling and probation but no incarceration according to her attorney.

The family living with a corpse were very religious, and this could explain some of their unusual resurrection beliefs. In the bible Jesus and Lazarus were both resurrected. In September of 2013 the local sheriff arrived at the residence for eviction proceedings because the mortgage had been defaulted on, and that was when the corpse was found. There was no attempt to hide the body, in fact the family had packed Peter Wald’s belongings with the rest of the household and had planned on taking the corpse with them. According to the lawyer for Kaling Wald “She certainly was remorseful, and definitely was teary-eyed. Indeed, she noted that she was never actually able to cry over the passing of her husband, but this seemed to have been an emotional breakthrough after the court proceedings yesterday. I think counseling is certainly going to be beneficial for her.”
