In 2009 the bird flu was found in B.C., and this had economic issues that caused a number of problems. It is now 2014, and a new avian flu quarantine is in effect again for some poultry farms in the B.C. region because a more virulent form of the same bird flu has been identified in birds at local farms once more. The Frasier Valley B.C. avian flu quarantine has affected 5 different farms in the area, some that have chickens and some that have turkeys. Poultry farms are inspected due to the risk of bird flu, and health officials have identified a very strong strain which has caused them to put an avian flu quarantine in place at the poultry farms where infected birds have been identified.

The latest strain of bird flu responsible for the avian flu quarantine in B.C. is more contagious than the previous strain identified in the past, and the risk for fatal complications and death is higher in the newest strain of bird flu identified in the British Columbia region. This has caused concern about the mutations that the H5N2 virus can undergo, and there is alarm that further mutations could result in a strain of the avian flu that is even more deadly in the future. 7 countries have stopped imports of poultry from the B.C. area of Canada as a precaution, and this shows the economic impacts that an avian flu quarantine can have for the entire area as well as the poultry farms that are placed under quarantine.

Louis Had, the stepfather of Michael Brown, is being investigated by law enforcement over claims that he was responsible for inciting a riot in Ferguson, Missouri after a grand jury returned a no true bill in the fatal shooting of the 18 year old black teen by white officer Darren Wilson a few months ago. As the parents of the boy who died Heard and Brown’s mother were understandably upset over the lack of charges, but what happened next could lead to criminal charges against Louis Head for inciting a riot. When the grand jury returned their decision a crowd had already formed outside the police station in Ferguson, Missouri. As the prosecutor announced the grand jury decision the crowd outside was very tense, and protests were expected by the public but agreements between community leaders and police called for peaceful protests without any property damage or violence.

When the decision by the grand jury in the Michael Brown case was announced news cameras were everywhere, and one filmed Louis Head making some very inflammatory comments that are viewed by many as inciting a riot. After the announcement Michael Brown’s mother, who was on a car outside of the Ferguson, Missouri police station, broke down in tears. Louis Head climbed up onto the car beside Brown’s mother and started telling the crowd to “Burn this bitch down.” This phrase was repeated by Heard more than once, and within the next 24 hours more than a dozen businesses and buildings in the community were burned to the ground. Many others were looted and damaged during the riots.

Recently the grand jury found no charges for Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of 18 year old Michael Brown, and this has fueled violence, protests, and a debate about whether the Ferguson police officer feared for his life. An 18 year old man is dead an that is tragic, but the grand jury went over all of the evidence in the case and determined that officer Darren Wilson was justified in using deadly force. Witnesses who saw what happened were conflicted, and 3 different autopsies did not clarify things as much as the jurors would have liked. There is no evidence that Brown had his hands raised in surrender when he was shot, in fact some of the witnesses corroborated the testimony of Darren Wilson that the teenager was charging him.

The forensic evidence in the Michael Brown case shows that Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot Brown while still seated in the police vehicle after Brown came into the side window and assaulted Wilson. There were witnesses to this altercation who have stated that Michael Brown was the initial aggressor in the confrontation. There is also evidence that the teen had stolen cigars from a nearby convenience store, and surveillance footage from the store shows the teen pushing the clerk around. Many are trying to portray the troubled teen as a boy scout who was an angel and the facts show that this is not true. Any person, regardless of color or age, should expect to be shot when assaulting a police officer.

Officials recently announced that the Quebec police officer who was speeding and caused a crash that resulted in a 5 year old killed and an older sibling being seriously injured will not face charges for the incident, something that many Canadians are upset about. To add insult to injury not only will no charges be brought but no explanation will be offered to the public about the lack of charges. The family of the 5 year old killed and the teenager injured are very unhappy with the outcome. The officials in the case did say that the family will be told why there will be no charges against the Quebec police officer, but no explanation will ease the pain of the family members or bring the yoiung boy back.

The Quebec police officer responsible for the crash that ended with the 5 year old killed was speeding, and was doing 120 km/h in a zone that is posted at 50km/h. The officer slammed into the car carrying the 5 year old and his family, and the impact was hard enough to knock the vehicle off the road. Witnesses who saw the crash have stated that the police officer did not have his sirens or lights on even though he was traveling at a very excessive rate of speed, and the department has said that the Quebec police officer was on routine patrol when the accident occurred. The 5 year old killed in the crash suffered massive head injuries, and he succumbed to these injuries 4 days after the crash occurred. Renel Bellance, who is the boy’s grandfather, told Quebec Morning “Since my little son died, I no longer live. It really hurts. I wonder what happened to life.”

Emerald White is the plaintiff in the dog attack lawsuit, and she freely admits that her 4 dogs went onto her neighbors property and killed the 10 year old beagle that the neighbors owned, yet she is suing the family whose dog was attacked and killed by her dogs. This is the kind of mixed up logic that American courts see on a regular basis, and even more surprising is that an attorney agreed to take the case. White owns 3 pit bulls and a pit bull mix dog, for a total of 4 dogs.

In the unusual Texas lawsuit over a dog attack Emerald White does not deny that her dogs went into the neighbors yard, or that they killed the family’s 10 year old beagle. White is claiming that the beagle attacked her, and her dogs killed the animal in order to protect her. The owner of the beagle, the Baker family, are named as the defendants. It was not enough that White allowed her animals to leave her yard and go into the neighboring property, and that the animals killed the beloved pet of the Baker family, Emerald believes the family should have to pay her for mental anguish, disfigurement, pain, loss of earnings, and a fear of future disease. Most states in the United States have dog control laws, and by her own admission White’s 4 dogs were on the neighbors property when the dog attack occurred.

German scientists have revealed that the Philae comet exploration has revealed organic molecules, and these molecules contain carbon. This carbon element is believed to be the basis of all life on earth, but the battery of the comet lander ran out of energy soon after so further exploration was not possible. The scientists have not determined whether the organic molecules discovered on the comet include complex compounds which are needed to create proteins though. One of the main mission goals was to determine whether the carbon based compounds on earth were brought here by comets in the past, and the comet lander spent 10 years in space before reaching the final destination of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Once on the comet the lander performed 57 hours of comet exploration before the battery shut down and the mission ended.

Comet exploration helps scientists understand many things about the earth, and possibly about how life started on our planet many years ago. Comets can contain organic materials from millions of years ago and this can help researchers and scientists see what the environment was like during that time period. The Philae comet lander has an instrument called a COSAC gas analyzer, and this tool can analyze the atmosphere and determine whether organic molecules are present. Some comets have contained organic molecules from millions of years ago, and these molecules are extremely well preserved. Another tool on the comet lander was the MUPUS, which was used to measure several comet surface variables including density, and also mechanical and thermal properties of the material.
