Secretary of State van Koeverden to make announcement at 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Ottawa


OTTAWA – We are building Canada strong, from playground to podium. As Canada’s Year of Sport continues with the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Ottawa, the Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), will attend the Men’s gold medal game on Saturday and make an announcement at the closing ceremony. He will be available for interviews.

Peepeekisis Cree Nation opens first Indigenous owned funeral home in Saskatchewan


September 17, 2026 — Peepeekisis Cree Nation, Lorlie, SK, Treaty 4 Territory — Indigenous Services Canada

Today, Chief Francis Dieter, along with members of the Peepeekisis Cree Nation Council, Elders, community members, and partners, opened the doors to the community’s newest business, the Peepeekisis Funeral Home. Located in Lorlie, Saskatchewan, the more than 10,000-square-foot facility is the first Indigenous-owned and operated funeral home in Saskatchewan.

The new funeral home marks an important milestone for Peepeekisis Cree Nation, providing a dedicated, community-centred space where families can gather to honour, remember, and celebrate the lives of loved ones close to home. The facility strengthens local capacity, supports culturally meaningful end-of-life services, and represents another step in the Nation’s journey toward greater self-determination and sovereignty.

Indigenous-led economic development projects are the direct result of vision, partnership, leadership, commitment to community, and strategic investment. Today’s grand opening of the Peepeekisis Funeral Home is an excellent example of this type of project, as the employment, training, and financial benefits will be realized, both within the community and throughout the surrounding area for years to come.

The total cost of the funeral home is $7,076,375, to which Indigenous Services Canada contributed just over $1 million through the Community Opportunities Readiness Program.

Canada and Ross River Dena Council celebrate reconciliation in action with Tsē Zūl Camp opening at the Faro Mine Site


September 16, 2026 — Faro Mine Site, located within the traditional territory of the Ross River Dena Council, part of the Kaska Nation, near Faro, Yukon — Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada

The Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency joined Ross River Dena Chief Dylan Loblaw, Council members, Elders and community members, Dr. Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for the Yukon and Parliamentary Secretary for Northern and Arctic Affairs, and other distinguished guests, in celebrating the official opening of Tsē Zūl Camp, a newly constructed accommodation facility for workers to support future remediation of the Faro Mine Site.

Supported by an investment of $90 million from the Faro Mine Remediation Project for leasing, site preparation, installation, and operation of Tsē Zūl Camp through to 2029, the new camp provides significantly improved accommodations to meet the growing number of workers expected to be involved in one of Canada’s largest and most complex environmental remediation projects in the years to come.

Tsē Zūl Camp represents an important milestone for both the Ross River Dena Council and the Faro Mine Remediation Project. The camp provides new infrastructure to support the growing workforce required for the Faro Mine Remediation Project. It demonstrates how collaboration between Indigenous partners and the Government of Canada, working closely with industry/project contractors, can support Indigenous-led economic development while also providing much-needed infrastructure for the safe and efficient remediation of the Faro Mine Site.

Built and wholly owned by Dena Nezziddi Development Corporation, the economic development arm of Ross River Dena Council, the new camp reflects an innovative approach to creating employment, training, and long-term business capacity for the First Nation’s citizens.

This achievement is a considerable step forward, and the Government of Canada remains committed to working with affected First Nations partners in innovative ways to ensure the remediation project respects Indigenous interests, knowledge, and priorities.

Backgrounder: The Government of Canada invests over $1.9M in Yukon workers and businesses

This information adds to the news release issued today The Government of Canada invests over $1.9 million to support workers and strengthen businesses in the Yukon about CanNor’s support, the businesses and organizations that received funding through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) and their projects.

The Government of Canada, through CanNor, is providing up to $1,903,869 to four projects that will help strengthen organizational efficiency and local capacity, create new growth opportunities, and build a more resilient and diversified economy for Northerners and all Canadians.

Project information

Project: Pivot from U.S. to Yukon markets for solar and battery energy storage system 
Recipient: Solvest Inc. 
Location: Whitehorse 
Details: A two-year project to design, build, and test a prototype portable solar and battery energy storage system for deployment at placer mines in the Yukon. The project will create a standardized renewable energy platform for Yukon placer mines that will reduce diesel dependency, improve energy reliability, and position Solvest to commercialize a Yukon-manufactured product through future sales and leasing opportunities. The project will enable Solvest to redirect investment from U.S. expansion into Canadian and territorial markets following tariff-related impacts on its Alaska growth strategy.
CanNor contribution: Up to $264,585

Project: Improving efficiency and productivity by modernizing grading operations 
Recipient: Cobalt Construction Inc.
Location: Whitehorse
Details: A two-year project to acquire and install four 3D grade control devices. This will modernize grading operations, improve productivity, reduce training time, enhance worksite safety, and strengthen the business. It will also lead to higher productivity and improved technical capability to help Cobalt secure more local contracts, allowing it to maintain its Yukon-based workforce. For over 35 years, Cobalt Construction has specialized in large earth moving projects in both the road construction and mining sectors.
CanNor contribution: Up to $389,285

Project: Technology modernization initiative
Recipient: Northern Vision Development LP
Location: Whitehorse
Details: A three-year project to modernize financial and operational systems for the Northern Vision Development LP group of companies. It is implementing a modern, cloud-based enterprise platform that will unify financial management, purchasing, inventory, and business-unit reporting across all 14 of its entities. It will improve productivity, financial accuracy and organizational capacity. 
CanNor contribution: Up to $1,000,000

Project: AI-enhanced productivity, estimating and digitization
Recipient: Ketza Construction Corporation
Location: Whitehorse
Details: A two-year project to implement AI-enabled productivity and estimating enhancements and upgrade Ketza Construction’s digital operations to modernize workflow and operations. This will enhance the business’s ability to model supply-chain risk, compare suppliers, manage volatile pricing, and reduce rework and inefficiency, building a more resilient and future-ready operating model. Ketza Construction has provided general contracting and project management and advisory services in the Yukon for over 50 years.
CanNor contribution: Up to $249,999

The Government of Canada invests over $1.9 million to support workers and strengthen businesses in the Yukon


Four Yukon businesses are seizing new opportunities, finding efficiencies and improving productivity to mitigate tariff and trade disruptions.

September 15, 2026 — Whitehorse, Yukon — Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

The Yukon is home to innovative entrepreneurs and businesses that have long contributed to a strong northern economy. As tariff pressures and changing trade conditions continue to create uncertainty, the Government of Canada is taking action by supporting businesses to adapt, seize new opportunities and protect jobs in the territory.

Today, the Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for CanNor, announced up to $1,903,869 in contributions to four Yukon businesses. These investments, through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), will equip Yukon businesses and workers with the tools they need to adapt to a rapidly changing global environment, strengthen organizational efficiency and local capacity, reinforce regional supply chains, and create new growth opportunities.

Minister Chartrand made the announcement at Solvest Inc., alongside Dr. Brendan Hanley, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Member of Parliament for the Yukon. Solvest Inc. is receiving up to $264,585 to design, build, and test a prototype portable solar and battery energy storage system for use at Yukon placer mines. Through this project, Solvest will pivot to national and territorial markets from a planned U.S. expansion, following tariff-related impacts on its Alaska-growth strategy.

CBSA officers seize over 215 kg of cocaine from two commercial trucks at Coutts

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Coutts port of entry in southern Alberta intercepted two commercial trucks arriving from the United States and seized a combined 215.5 kg of suspected cocaine in July 2026.

A commercial truck was referred for a secondary examination on July 26, during which border services officers detected 80 bricks of suspected cocaine concealed within four boxes located among the declared load. The driver and a passenger were arrested by the CBSA. A total of 90.94 kg of cocaine was seized and transferred to the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region.

On July 31, a second commercial truck was referred for a secondary examination, where border services officers detected 107 bricks of cocaine within the shipment, and a total of 124.6 kg of suspected cocaine was seized. The driver was arrested by the CBSA and the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region took custody of the individual and the suspected narcotics.

The combined seizures resulted in the interception of 215.5 kg of suspected cocaine before it could enter Canada.

Both investigations are ongoing.
