A self-driving tractor-trailer now has approval to drive on some public highways in the U.S.
The driver can hand over full control of the self-driving truck when traffic and other conditions allow it. (Daimler Trucks)
The Freightliner Inspiration, developed by Daimler Trucks North America, has received a licence from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles to operate on public roads in the state, the company announced Tuesday.
The truck took part in its ceremonial first drive in autonomous mode at a ceremony at the Hoover Dam.
The driver can hand over full control of the truck when traffic and other conditions allow it.
The truck uses sensors and computers to:
- Help it drive within the speed limit.
- Stay in its lane.
- Keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Slow or stop in response to road and traffic conditions.
The driver must take over when exiting the highway, when driving on smaller roads or when docking for making deliveries.
