Alberta Health Services postponed 23 surgeries on Monday after it received an email that led to further investigation by Edmonton police.

The decision to postponed the surgeries was made as a precaution, AHS said in a statement.

Surgeries were postponed at the Walter C. MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre, which includes the University of Alberta Hospital, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Emergency surgeries will still be performed as needed at hospitals, AHS said.

“The safety and care of patients, their families and our staff is our primary concern, and we will continue to make sure this is upheld,” the statement said.

AHS said it will not provide further details at this time to allow the police investigation to proceed.
