Safety, Environmental Protection and Engaging Canadians were Top of Mind for 2014

May 4, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta – National Energy Board

The National Energy Board’s (NEB or Board) 2014 Annual Report was tabled today in Parliament. The report is produced each year and provides and overview of the Board’s activities for that calendar year.

“We continued to assert a strong regulatory presence in 2014 and have worked hard to keep Canadians safe and protect the environment” said Peter Watson, Chair and CEO. “I want the public to feel certain that they have a regulator they can trust, and I believe the information outlined in our Annual Report provides that confidence.”

Some highlights include:

Receiving nearly 600 applications for energy infrastructure, imports/exports, tolls and tariffs and abandonment of facilities – a 17 per cent increase from 2013;
Completing over 150 engagement activities – a 64 per cent increase from 2013; and
Completing over 350 compliance activities – a 14 per cent increase from 2013.

The Board took strong enforcement actions in 2014 where any non-compliance was noted including 316 Notices of Non-Compliance, Inspection Officer Orders, Safety Orders and Administrative Monetary penalties. The Board was also pleased to see that overall incidents are down 37 per cent from the previous year.
