Gregoire House Fire Homicide Victim Identified, Police Need Public’s Help
Police are asking for help from the public in identifying a suspect in the January 6 Gregoire house fire. The homicide victim has been identified as 25 year old Jonathan Bennet, and the suspect was caught on video from the private security system of another residence in the neighborhood. The death of Bennet was ruled a homicide and was not caused from the fire according to investigators. The video footage shows a male wearing protective clothing, colored orange or red, that had reflective stripes. The male can be seen in a vehicle described by police as a newer BMW 3 Series four door sedan, and the suspect and vehicle drove by the residence several times earlier in the day during a 30 minute period.
Around the time of the Gregoire house fire the security system footage shows a man wearing similar protective clothing with reflective patches walking in the neighborhood near the residence of the homicide victim. The video does not show the face of the suspect. RCMP Cpl. George Cameron said “Since acquiring the video, investigators, they’ve had it analyzed by professional forensic video specialists. Police feel that the public may be able to help investigators … Hopefully someone will recognize the car, recognize anything about it that’s going to help them narrow their search down and find somebody that’s going to have some information that will point our investigators in the right direction.” Cameron continued by stating “It just goes to show you how challenging an investigation like this can be. Especially (in) Fort McMurray, where we have such a diverse population, our roots are from all over the country and the world … you can just imagine how challenging that would be to track people down.”
