Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is Now Closed
The Fort Chipewyan winter road is now closed, and it officially closed on March 23 because of the warm weather that the area has experienced recently. During the winter the road is created through the use of snow compaction and the creation of ice surfaces over sand substrate. Ice bridges are also created over the rivers in the region as well. The municipality explained that the closure was due to warm weather and also to handle erosion control and traffic remediation so that caribou migrations are not affected. During the winter the road provides many benefits to traffic but warm weather makes it unsuitable for travel and poses safety risks in some areas. On March 14 the Saskatchewan La Loche Winter Trail was closed because of warmer weather as well.
The Fort Chipewyan winter road is the only route available for travel to certain parts of the remote region, and during the warmer months this travel is not possible. The road is created by using water to create a solid layer of ice which is approximately 6 inches thick, and the created road is staked off to provide guides that drivers follow along the way. The Fort Chipewyan winter road goes through majestic forests, and it is very common to see native animals like lynx, moose, and bobcat. The opportunity to take this route is no longer available until the cold season hits again, but there will always be another chance this winter when the Fort Chipewyan winter road is created and opened to traffic once again.
