Why do you buy local food or shop at local businesses?

Edmonton AM mug

Buy local. We hear that phrase a lot when we talk about food and small businesses in Edmonton.

What does that mean really? And what effect, if any, does buying local have in Edmonton, home of one of the biggest shopping malls in the world?

You could win a locally-crafted Edmonton A.M. mug by taking part in our “Buy Local” conversation on Wednesday’s show. (CBC)

Today on Edmonton AM, we’ll take a look at that issue and examine the pros and cons of buying locally, whether shopping for tomatoes at the Strathcona Market, or buying clothing on 124th Street.

We want to know what you think. What factors do you consider in patronizing a locally owned store or restaurant, or buying locally grown food? Take our survey and let us know.

You can also win one of four Edmonton AM mugs, crafted by master potter Heather Edwards.

Just take part in our ‘Buy Local” conversation during Wednesday’s show by sending us an email at edmontonam@cbc.ca.

Listen to Edmonton AM on CBC radio at 93.9 FM or 740 AM.

The winners will be drawn just before the 8:30 news.

What’s the biggest factor when you’re deciding whether to buy local?
