Charges laid after ‘false’ bank robbery in Vegreville

Vegreville RCMP have charged a 22-year-old man with public mischief and possession of a dangerous weapon after he falsely reported a bank robbery.

According to police, the man called Vegreville RCMP around 9 a.m. MT on Christmas Day to report a robbery underway at the TD Bank.

When officers arrived on scene, the caller confronted them.

CBC News was told the man was shot after he refused to drop his weapon after being repeatedly ordered to do so by police. A replica firearm was found at the scene.

Police say no one else was involved in the incident, and that the robbery complaint was found to be false.

The man was taken to hospital where he is listed in stable condition and is expected to be released soon.

Once out of hospital, he will be remanded into police custody. He is expected to make his first court appearance in Edmonton on Dec. 29.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which is called in whenever the actions of a police officer may have caused serious injury or death, is currently investigating the shooting.

Vegreville is about 100 kilometres east of Edmonton.
