Fire breaks out at Southgate Centre shopping mall

Firefighters are attempting to extinguish a fire which broke out at a south Edmonton shopping mall Friday morning.

The fire started on the roof of the Hudson’s Bay store at the Southgate Centre, said Edmonton Fire Rescue spokesperson Rowan Anderson in an interview with CBC News.

Crews got the call around 5:43 a.m. and arrived on scene in the Empire Park neighbourhood six minutes later, Anderson said.

As of 6:30 a.m., flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the Bay store. The fire was brought under control a few minutes later, Anderson said.

About 30 firefighters remain on scene and are relying a bucket lift to reach the roof.

No injuries were reported, Anderson said. There is no indication of what caused the fire, he said.

Southgate Centre, at the corner of 51st Avenue and 111th Street, contains 165 retailers.
