A tornado warning is in effect Friday evening for parts of northern Alberta.
A tornado warning is in place for Improvement District 349 including Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, Environment Canada said.
Meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm “that is producing a tornado” at around 6:19 p.m., the online alert said.
Experts are calling the potential tornado a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”
Damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain could hit the region, Environment Canada said.
The possible tornado was 55 kilometres northeast of Lac La Biche, the weather agency said. It is moving to the northeast at roughly 20 km/h.
Environment Canada experts warn to take cover if a roaring sound is heard or if people see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground or flying debris.
People are told to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, Environment Canada said.
Other weather warnings
There were several weather warnings and watches across central and northern Alberta on Friday evening.
There’s also a severe thunderstorm warning for the Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville area.
Severe thunderstorm watches have been issued for most of the capital region including the city of Edmonton, with the risk of large hail.
