A worker is dead following an incident Monday at a Suncor oilsands mine in northern Alberta.
The man was killed Monday afternoon at the Fort Hills site about 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
Occupational Health and Safety said it was notified and investigators were dispatched to the scene Monday night.
OHS spokesperson Vivian Binnema told CBC News the incident is under investigation but provided no additional details.
Ledcor spokesperson David Hoff said the man killed was one of the company’s employees. The man was killed while doing maintenance work at the Suncor site, Hoff said.
Ledcor and Suncor are conducting investigations into the incident, he said.
Ledcor is offering grief counselling to affected workers and has been in contact with the man’s family.
Hoff would not provide details on the man’s age or hometown.
“It’s a very sad day for Ledcor, tragic day,” Hoff said.
“Work was stopped yesterday and we are all focusing on people today, supporting the people who were involved as much as possible.”
Fort Hills is an open-pit truck and shovel mine about 525 kilometres north of Edmonton.
