An inmate who went missing Saturday from the minimum-security Stan Daniels Healing Centre in Edmonton is back in custody, St. Albert RCMP said Tuesday.
Police arrested Jimmy Kyle Saskatchewan, 28, in St. Albert on Monday morning after being tipped off by someone who had seen the inmate’s photo in the media.
The person said he had seen the man walking near the parking lot for a London Drugs and Safeway store.
Saskatchewan “attempted to flee from police when he exited Safeway,” RCMP said in a news release.
The Edmonton Police Service had issued a warrant for his arrest.
Saskatchewan was serving a sentence of two-and-a-half years for a firearm offence and vehicle offences, including driving while disqualified.
The Stan Daniels Healing Centre is a 72-bed correctional facility operated through Native Counselling Services of Alberta that provides programs specifically for Indigenous offenders.
The centre’s programming focuses on repairing relationships between offenders and their communities, and helps individuals find employment and housing after their release.
Residents at the centre are male offenders who are either conditionally released on day parole or full parole, or statutory release.
