The man taking over as interim artistic director of the Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre in Saskatoon hopes to continue the work done by his predecessor.
Playwright Kenneth T. Williams will temporarily take over the post when Curtis Peeteetuce steps down as artistic director at the end of the month.
“It’s essential that we be able to tell our stories and get to share our stories,” Williams said of the theatre’s work.
Williams has been able to work with Peeteetuce to build plans for the theatre down the road, so that the company will be in a good position for whoever takes over from Williams.
Part of that, Williams said, has been getting funding in order.
Artistically, Williams said they are aiming to do some site-specific theatre pieces where a performance happens in a specific location.
“Have a series of site-specific stories that tell the Indigenous story of Saskatoon.”
Williams said with the projects he has in the works for the new year, he isn’t able to take on the position permanently.
“It’s a gift to be this busy in the arts.”
The theatre’s current production, Kohkoms In Toyland by Curtis Peeteetuce, has one last performance at the Broadway Theatre Saturday at 8 p.m. CST.
