Investing in the Economy, Creating Jobs

November 14, 2016 – Ottawa, Ont.

The Government of Canada is supporting the Abitibi-Témiscamingue community and regional economy by investing in important public infrastructure.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has awarded a $2.39-million contract to Tetra Tech QI Inc. for design work to replace the Quebec dam at the Timiskaming Dam Complex.The Quebec dam is now at the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.

Once the design is complete, PSPC will hold an open and transparent tender for construction bids.

The general scope of work for the Timiskaming Quebec Dam Replacement Project is as follows:

• construct a new dam
• remove the existing structure
• continue to permit traffic over the existing Quebec dam during construction

Quick Facts

• The Timiskaming Dam Complex is located approximately 65 kilometres northeast of North Bay, Ontario, on the border between Quebec and Ontario.
• It includes two structurally independent dams, the Ontario dam and the Quebec dam, which are located on opposite sides of Long Sault Island in the Ottawa River.
• A roadway extends over the top of the dams and serves as an important transportation link between Quebec and Ontario.
• The Timiskaming Dam Complex was originally built between 1909 and 1913. The Quebec dam was rebuilt in the 1930s following a foundation failure.
• Both dams are concrete structures that control water flow by means of sluices containing removable stoplogs.
• The dams control the last major reservoir on the Ottawa River.
• The Timiskaming Ontario Dam Replacement Project is almost complete, and the new Ontario dam will be open and operational by spring 2017.
