RIO DE JANEIRO — A window was smashed by either gunfire or stones Tuesday night on a bus carrying journalists from the Rio 2016 basketball venue to the main media centre.
There were reports that several journalists sustained minor glass cuts in the incident on Tuesday night.
It occurred on a new highway between the two sites, which are about 40 minutes apart.
“What we can say is that a bus from the Deodoro venue to the main press centre was in an incident in which there was smashed glass. We don’t know what from. The police are investigating,” a spokesman for the Rio Organizing Committee said.
They expect to release a statement but are unlikely to have any further details until they receive more information from the police, most likely on Wednesday.
It was the second such narrow miss of the Summer Games. Over the weekend a bullet almost hit a journalist in the equestrian media centre. That is in the same group of Olympic facilities where the basketball stadium is located at the Deodoro military base.
Murder and mayhem are a constant problem in Rio. Nearly 2,500 people were murdered in the city in the first six months of this year. In all, there were more than 9,000 incidents of violent crime.
Police conducted a major raid against drug traffickers last week in the Complexo da Alamao in what they said was an attempt to make the Olympics safer.
Several tourists, journalists and Olympic coaches have reported being robbed since athletes and delegations began arriving last week.
