City working to repair sinkhole in south Edmonton neighbourhood

Residents in a south Edmonton neighbourhood are treading carefully after a large sinkhole opened up on the street.

The hole, a few metres wide and a couple of metres deep, opened up Thursday afternoon in the Greenfield neighbourhood at 40th Avenue and 112A Street.

Lynn Tessari usually parks her vehicle out in front of her home but on Thursday, she decided to park out back.

Ten minutes later, she spotted the sinkhole out front — right where her car would have been.

“It worked out good. I didn’t lose a vehicle,” she said. “It didn’t make any noise. It was just there. There was no noise. It was crazy.”

Tessari said her family blocked off the street until city crews arrived within an hour.

The roadway surrounding the sinkhole remains closed. City crews are dropping CCTV cameras into the hole on Friday to determine how it happened and how it can be fixed, city spokeswoman Carla Putnam Kerr said.

“We don’t know what it is yet, but they will record the footage today and record the cause after reviewing the video,” she said. “After they figure out the cause, that will determine the timeline for fixing it.”

Putnam Kerr said the hole is a priority for city crews.

“They are working on it, so we do ask that residents give it plenty of room in the meanwhile.”
