Summerside flies its Canadian pride

Rhonda Navratil is proud to see her Summerside community awash in a sea of red and white.

The Edmonton real estate agent is on a mission to make her neighbourhood the most patriotic community in the city.

Over the past week, with the help of other volunteers, Navratil has put Canadian flags in front of every house that wanted one.

So far, they’ve handed out 4,000 Maple Leaf flags.

“It seems to make everybody so happy,” said Navratil.

“People have said that kids are getting off the bus, waiting to see if the flag is up in their yard yet, and one lady said that her little boy went along the street and hugged every flag.”

Navratil says the campaign has been a wonderful way for her to share her community spirit. She is excited by how many others want to be a part of decorating Summerside, a newer neighbourhood in the city’s southeast.

“That is the feeling that we get from everybody,” said Navratil.

“We had people show up with baby buggies, puppies, whole families come out and do it together, and they seem to want to do something that will make someone else happy.”
