Steven Vollrath was found guilty Wednesday in the kidnapping and assault of in Richard Suter, a senior who killed a toddler at an Edmonton restaurant in 2013.
Vollrath showed no expression as he was convicted of kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and impersonating police.
Vollrath, 33, kidnapped Suter and cut off his thumb after buying a bulletproof vest and a police toque just days before the crime.
When passersby found Suter injured and bleeding along the side of the road on Jan. 24, 2015, they said he was clutching a black fanny pack in his hand. It was turned over to police.
Inside, investigators found a driver’s licence, Alberta health care card and a social insurance card all belonging to Vollrath.
Suter crashed into a restaurant patio in May 2013, killing toddler Geo Mounsef. He was found guilty of failing to provide a breath sample and has served a four-month sentence.
During his own trial, Suter testified about the abduction from his Riverbend home in January 2015. He said three or four men posing as police officers forced him from his home and put a bag over his head.
Suter said he believed he was targeted because of his involvement in the little boy’s death.
