Man accused of filming child in mall bathroom practised psychiatry in Australia

A man facing child-porn charges after allegedly filming someone in a West Edmonton Mall bathroom last week practised psychiatry in Australia.

Aaron Voon, 41, works at the Successful Development and Therapy Centre in Perth, Australian media is reporting.

Administrators at the clinic emailed clients a message from Voon over the weekend, in which he said “a most terrible thing has happened with me” and pleaded to cease his practice immediately, Perth Now reported on Monday.

Edmonton police say the incident, in which Voon allegedly used a mobile device to record someone in the washroom, happened at the movie theatre in West Edmonton Mall on May 22, just before 4 p.m.

Three days later, Voon was charged with possession of child pornography, making child pornography and voyeurism.

Voon has ‘special interest’ in working with children

A source told CBC News at the time the charges were laid that Voon practised psychiatry in Australia.

A cached web page from Australia’s Marian Centre, a private acute mental health service, lists Dr. Aaron Voon as a psychiatrist with advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry.

The biography describes Voon as having worked in numerous public hospital and community settings around Perth.

He lectured senior medical students at the University of Western Australia and was “heavily involved” in teaching psychiatric and pediatric trainees.

“He has a special interest in working with young children and their families,” the biography says.

Voon is listed as a new fellow in Western Australia in the 2006 annual report from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
