Recent Athabasca Police Standoff Ends With Male Found Dead in Residence
A recent police standoff in Athabasca ended with a male being found dead in the residence. The standoff occurred last Monday night and went on for hours. The incident occurred in the Cornwall area of Athabasca. Police were initially called to the location after they received a report of a domestic disturbance. According to RCMP K Division Sgt. Josee Valiquette “As police arrived at that location … they heard one single gunshot and the Edmonton RCMP emergency response team was deployed. After several attempts to contact the occupant, (an) emergency response team entered the residence. One male was found deceased inside.” At approximately 9:45 police warned the local residents to stay inside of their homes, and if possible to take shelter on the ground floor or the basement in their homes. A crisis negotiator was called in to start negotiations with the individual involved in the police standoff.
When discussing the recent Athabasca police standoff Valiquette said “We were thinking of public safety, we’re telling people in that area to stay in their home, as we wouldn’t want a stray bullet that would hurt somebody else. When officers entered the residence, he was the only person in the home. I understand they have talked to other people that may have information about what happened, however there was only one individual in the residence.” The RCMP thanked the local residents for their cooperation during the incident. The details about the male who was found deceased have not been made public yet.
