BACKGROUNDER Lake Louise Roadway Infrastructure Completion – Banff National Park

Roadway infrastructure upgrades and improvements in Lake Louise:

Important federal infrastructure roadwork, valued at approximately $12 million, on Lake Louise Drive and Whitehorn Road is now complete. These are the main roads that connect the Lake Louise community with the Lake Louise Ski Area and with the upper Lake Louise area, including Moraine Lake. The critical upgrades and roadway repairs in the Lake Louise area will support visitor safety measures, more efficient traffic flow and reduced disturbance for wildlife.

Work completed on Whitehorn Road (2023):

·        Resurfacing of 2.5 kilometres of road.

·        Replacements to two Texas gates and other road maintenance.

·        The construction of a wildlife underpass, funded by the Lake Louise Ski Area,  to support the safer movement of wildlife in this key corridor.

Work completed on Lake Louise Drive (2024):

·        Resurfacing of 3.5 kilometres of road.

·        The construction of a roundabout at the intersection at Sentinel Road,
Fairview Drive, and Lake Louise Drive.

·        The addition of push-button activated flashing lights for pedestrian crossings.

·        Line painting.

·        Replacement signage and directional traffic improvements.

·        Upgrades at the upper Lake Louise parking lot and Fairview day use area.

·        A trail reroute for the lowest kilometre of the Tramline Trail, which now runs alongside Lake Louise Drive and connects with the scenic Bow River Loop at the Bow River Bridge. By rerouting this section of the trail and closing the old kilometer of trail in the summer, wildlife will have more space to move                undisturbed through the Fairview wildlife corridor.
