One thing’s for sure; Jimmy Fallon can make epic TV moments happen.
On last night’s episode, the host took suggestions from the audience one said, “Hey Jimmy, I heard Don Francisco from Sábado Gigante is now on Telemundo doing a show on Sunday nights titled, Don Francisco te Invita. You should have him on your show.
“I love Don Francisco; he’s a legend. I’d love to have him on. But unfortunately, there’s no way to get him here right now,” the 42-year-old funnyman told to the audience. “Well, there is one way. Legend has it that he can be summoned through the power of song. I can give it a try.”
That’s when Fallon walks over and the music begins to play and breaks out into song nailing Willie Nelson‘s voice. Then, just like magic, Don Francisco appears and sings the Spanish verse of the song. The two then unite at the song’s chorus. What a moment!
If the song and duet sound familiar to you it’s because it’s a nod to a very groundbreaking moment in the history of music. The song was originally recorded in 1975 by Albert Hammond, but became a famously known for Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson’s 1983 recording.
The song went on to become Iglesias’ biggest hit in the United States and Canada, and Nelson’s biggest European hit. In 1984, the two were named “Duo of the Year” by the Country Music Association, and “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” was named single of the year by the Academy of Country Music.
After a 53 year run of Sábado Gigante, Mario Luis “Don Francisco” Kreutzberger bowed out. He’s now back, but this time on Telemundo with his show Don Francisco te Invita airing every Sunday at 10PM/9C.
