Warmer Weather Leads to Closing of Lac La Biche and La Loche Winter Trails
Now that warmer weather is here many of the winter trails in the area are closed. The RMWB recently announced that the Lac La Biche winter trails and the La Loche winter trails have closed and travel is not permitted on these trails according to the release put out by the municipality. After March 24 the municipality will no longer perform maintenance on these trails and they are off limits. Signs advising visitors that the trails are closed and that they are not currently being maintained have been posted and these signs can be found at the trail entrances. Area residents are accustomed to the trails opening and closing according to the weather but visitors to the area may not be as knowledgeable and should pay special attention to all of the signs which are posted on any trail that may be used.
While the warmer weather puts many of the winter trails off limits some of the winter roads may still be open. The Fort Chipewyan winter road remained open after the La Loche and Lac La Biche winter trails closed, but the weight limits on the winter road fluctuate depending on whether it is day or night. Anyone who wants to find out the status of the winter roads and trails can access the winter road hotline and receive the latest and most up to date status for any of the winter roads and trails in the area. The hotline number is 1-866-743-6111, or it can be accessed by calling 1-866-743-7869.
