Downtown Police Raid by Wood Buffalo RCMP Leads to Drug Charges Against Two Men

The Wood Buffalo RCMP performed a downtown police raid and found more than they expected when their single target ended up catching two men. On April 1, 2016 the police went to an apartment on Manning Street to serve an arrest warrant for Yimag Abdi Ahmed and take him into custody. According to Cpl. George Cameron, the spokesperson for the Wood Buffalo RCMP, Ahmed had not shown up for a court date and that led to the arrest warrant being issued. When police went to place the 24 year old Ahmed under arrest the suspect resisted the officers and fought being placed under arrest. No one was hurt in the fight that followed but now Yimag is facing an additional charge of obstructing a peace officer as well as marijuana possession and multiple counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking charges.

During the Wood Buffalo RCMP downtown police raid 24 year old Maya Ahmed was also arrested and is facing charges of obstructing a peace officer and possession of and trafficking cocaine. Police discovered almost 3 grams of marijuana, around 107 grams of cocaine, and more than $5,500 in cash when they arrested Maya. Cameron said “Obviously they didn’t want to cooperate and didn’t want to come with our members. One of his conditions was to keep the peace, which obviously some people didn’t want to be doing that day.” Approximately 7 other individuals were arrested at the apartment but these individuals were not charged. Cpl. Cameron explained that “Everyone scattered as soon as police arrived, which raised suspicion. We had to detain everyone to find out who they were and what was happening. They were arrested until we could find out why they were running. It’s not uncommon for someone to be arrested in a situation like this but then released without charge.”
