Student creates Earth flag for interplanetary missions

A Swedish university student has designed a proposed flag for Earth, which he envisions as the symbol for all earthlings as they visit other planets.

The International Flag of Planet Earth is Oskar Pernefeldt’s graduation project for his bachelor’s degree from Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. It consists of seven white interlocking rings forming a flower on a blue background.

“Current expeditions in outer space use different national flags depending on which country is funding the voyage,” wrote Pernefeldt in his proposal.

“The space travelers, however, are more than just representatives of their own countries,” he wrote. “They are representatives of planet Earth.”

The proposal featured several mock-ups of how the flag could be used, and people on Twitter weighed in with their opinions.

Love the idea of a Planet Earth flag, but this one looks like the 10 Rings from #IronMan http://t.co/GLT2c7SywE pic.twitter.com/qqbk5xxe0R

This isn’t the first proposal for a flag for Earth.

A Redditor came up with this design and posted it to r/pics three years ago.

That’s a great @EarthFlag. Anyone with knowledge of the solar system can draw it. Visible enough from far away. pic.twitter.com/qAd3q50PTK

Writers of popular and science fiction, of course, have come up with their own versions of a future flag for Earth.

This one is from the Star Trek universe:

TBH, I think the United Earth flag looked a bit better https://t.co/HModmaRBVj pic.twitter.com/EIjGBvnTyj

What do you think? Does Earth need one flag to unite us all? Should astronauts adopt a single symbol for use on other planets?
