MP O’Neill-Gordon Marks Official Start of Construction for New Public Service Pay Centre
For Immediate Release
May 20, 2015 – Miramichi, N.B. – Public Works and Government Services Canada
Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, along with Gerry Cormier, Mayor of Miramichi, and Nick Iwanowski, from Broccolini Inc., today officially marked the start of the construction of the new Public Service Pay Centre in Miramichi, New Brunswick, with a sod-turning ceremony.
Less than two months ago, in Miramichi, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the awarding of a contract worth approximately $85 million to a joint venture led by Broccolini Inc., which will design and construct the building, and then lease it to the Government of Canada for a 20-year period.
The new building will accommodate 550 employees and will be constructed on the former exhibition site property in Miramichi. Ms. O’Neill-Gordon also announced that the construction is now expected to be completed ahead of schedule in 2017, with employees anticipated to move into the building in early 2018.
Consolidating pay services into one facility and updating technology to replace outdated and labour-intensive information systems should generate more than $70 million in annual savings for Canadians starting in 2016–2017.
Quick Facts
The new three-storey building will include approximately 9,500 m2 of office space, which will accommodate 550 employees. The building will have a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Canada “Core and Shell” Gold standard for environmental performance.
This contract was awarded through a fair, open and transparent tendering process that determined which company could deliver all of the project requirements while generating the best value for Canadians.
