FOIP Requests Issued to Prevent Document Destruction Before PC Departure
A number of FOIP requests have been issued by Alberta Party leader Greg Clark in order to prevent any document destruction before the upcoming PC departure. Some are fearful that the outgoing government members will destroy documents and engage in illegal shredding. According to a spokesperson for the privacy commissioner for the province it is not possible to stop any illegal document shredding until there is proof and evidence that this has actually occurred. Gref Clark has submitted numerous Freedom of Information and Privacy Act requests in order to obtain copies of relevant records and attempt to prevent any illegal shredding of relevant documents. Clark stated “I’ll do what I can to stop these documents subject to a FOIP request from being shredded” and has voiced his opinion that outgoing government officials have a lot to hide. The deletion of digital documents is also a concern.
There are some who have reported seeing large bags that contain significant amounts of shredded files and documents outside of some government offices. Under Alberta law it is illegal and a criminal act to destroy any departmental or cabinet information. There are exemptions and these include personnel documentation and constituency records. There is no evidence that document destruction is occurring, in spite of the FOIP requests by Clark, however the politician says that it would be naive for people to think that documents are not being destroyed. An investigation will only be started if there is a complaint and some evidence of an illegal act.
