The byelection results show that Verna Murphy came in second, losing out to Colleen Tatum, however Murphy is pleased with the campaign results and said that she felt good about the political debates that occurred during the campaign. “We ran a great campaign, we did it the way we wanted to do it. We didn’t have any money, we didn’t have any big machine, we just did it grassroots. Tomorrow I can wake up and hold my head high in a way that we did everything, and I am, I’m totally happy with everything.” As a freelance writer and foster parent Murphy wanted to make positive changes in the community, and during her campaign she discussed some of the most important issues and priorities with voters and supporters.

When asked about the byelection results Verna Murphy said she was fine with second, stating “That’s democracy. Voters voted, and Colleen will be in there for the next two-and-a-half years and doing the work people expect her to do. I truly believe that everything works out the way that it’s supposed to, and this is the way it’s supposed to be for Fort McMurray right now. People really feel disengaged from their municipal government here in Fort McMurray, and that’s so sad to me, because our local government affects us the fastest. I found it really disheartening that people felt like they weren’t being heard.” Veronica Doleman, another candidate who placed third in the byelection results, was disappointed in the low turnout and said “I wish that more people that engaged with all the candidates would have gone out and voted, I guess, is the real disappointment. (They) had concerns and wanted to be heard, but if you don’t go out and vote it’s hard for anyone to make a difference that way.”
