As the oldest settled community in Alberta, Canada, Fort Chipewyan can be a great place for a visit whether you are a tourist in the area or you reside close by Fort MacMurray. This settlement goes back for more than two centuries, with a history that is rich and fascinating. Starting in the 18th century this fort was the place where many headed, and it was a popular destination for trappers, fur traders, and even explorers. In 1788 a trading post was built in the area by the Northwest Trading Company, in part because of the natural beauty and scenic vistas that were offered. Fort Chipewyan is still a popular spot to visit today, and it is very close to the Woods Buffalo National Park which is one of the UNESCO Heritage Sites listed.

During the summer months a visit to Fort Chipewyan means either a boat ride or a trip by air, but during the winter months there are winter roads that can be used to travel to the site. The fort has around 1,000 residents today and it is a unique and incredible experience for most ages. You can see how the residents still follow traditions in the modern world, and find out all about the fascinating history of the place. While you are in the area you can also visit the national park and watch in wonder as the largest herd of wild buffalo in the world graze and enjoy the surroundings.
