There’s no question that Jennifer Aniston is a hair icon. “The Rachel”—and the surge of copycat cuts it inspired in the ’90s—is proof of that. But since she moved on from the look, her usual hairstyle has remained largely the same over the past few decades: blowdried to perfection and super sleek. While she’s had some loose waves here or there, it’s rare we see her with anything other than pin-straight hair. But at the premiere of her new Apple TV+ show, The Morning Show, Aniston switched it up and surprised fans with a glimpse of her natural waves.
Aniston’s longtime hairstylist (and the man behind “The Rachel”) Chris McMillan shared an Instagram photo of Aniston on the carpet, and pointed out how unexpected it was for the actor to wear her hair as it naturally dries. “This was such an honor to be a part of. The hair is Jen’s natural curl and waves,” he wrote in the caption.
While her texture is natural, her hair isn’t totally untouched. To get the look, McMillan let her hair air-dry slightly, and then used a Dyson Supersonic dryer to “touch up minimally” by blowdrying her roots in one direction. He then “touched up random pieces” with a GHD Wave Iron, and finished off by layering detangling spray and leave-in conditioner.
Aniston recently opened up to Glamour about how she discovered her curls in the first place. “I love my hair when it’s straight,” she said. “When I was a little girl, I had really long, straight hair to my bum—below my bum, actually. And then when my mom gave me the authority to do anything I wanted with my hair, mistakenly, I cut it all off. I could never grow it back. And then when I cut it short, I discovered it was curly.”
