Oilers sneak past Avalanche after blowing 3-0 lead

Derek Roy scored a power-play goal halfway through the third period as the Edmonton Oilers pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday at Rexall Place.

The Oilers had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind goals by defenceman Martin Marincin (his first goal in 77 NHL games), Jordan Eberle (21st) and Taylor Hall (12th) in the first 10 minutes of the game to drive Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov from the nets.

It’s was the first goal for Hall, who played only one game between Jan. 20 and March 21 because of a foot injury, since Jan. 9 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Colorado backup Reto Berra came off the bench to make 26 saves the rest of the way, but the Avalanche still fell to the Oilers, who were outshot 33-21 after 40 minutes.

Jarome Iginla (25th on a power play) and Alex Tanguay (21st) scored for the Avs in the second period to narrow the deficit to one, then Ryan O’Reilly (14th) tied the score 3-3 with a snap shot 4:54 into the third period.

Ben Scrivens had a busy night in the Oilers net, blocking 41 of 44 shots.

With the win, Edmonton improves to 21-40-13 for 55 points. The Oilers are eight points ahead of the last-place Buffalo Sabres and three points up on the second-last Arizona Coyotes.

The Oilers next game is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rexall Place against the Dallas Stars.
