$37,000 worth of damage after vandals smash dozens of vehicle windows

Smashed glass and thousands of dollars of damage greeted many people in northeast Edmonton Saturday morning after dozens of vehicles were vandalized overnight.

Police said there have been more than 70 reports after the vandalism spree, which left windows smashed in vehicles between 111th and 122nd Avenues, between 43rd and 66th Streets.

Police say it appears the vehicles were randomly targeted and the vandals used a blunt instrument to smash the windows. All told, damages are estimated at over $37,000.

Jason Cioran, who has lived in the area for six years, spent part Saturday afternoon putting a piece of plastic over his smashed driver-side window.

“It is a little annoying. I’ll just need to figure out it out and get it fixed,” he said.

Cioran said this was the first time he is aware of any cars being vandalized in the area.

The vandals appear to have damaged the vehicles between midnight and 3:00 a.m..

“This is incredibly irresponsible behaviour that has a huge impact on the community and has affected many residents,” says Const. Nikolas Pavlov wrote in a release.

“We are asking the suspects to turn themselves in at Northeast Division, and perhaps the consequences for their criminal activity may be less severe than if they decide to not be accountable.”

Officers are now speaking to witnesses and collecting any video that might identify the vandals.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers.
